Post-Existential Chaos
statement
I encourage my sense of humor to pervade my artwork. The only parameter I set for myself is to be authentic. I do this by presenting the viewer with a truthful view of what interests me without fearing judgment. Mostly, I enjoy struggling with philosophical inquiries. For example, what is the purpose of life, what is the essence of art, what is the role of beauty in art, and can we separate our physical existence from our minds? During the process of composing an image for a painting, I play around with my thoughts until I can condense them into a visual language. Consequently, my paintings give the viewer a glimpse into my inner world. I invite them to challenge their aesthetic beliefs and consider my point of view.
The subjects of my paintings often seem ordinary yet strange – simultaneously in their element and contorted. This is cathartic to me. Prior to making art, I practiced corporate law for over a decade. As a result, I feel comfortable in various professional settings, while belonging solely to none. Similarly, as a native of Brazil and the Netherlands, raised in both countries, my international background helps me fit in almost anywhere – and at the same time, nowhere. Upon starting to work with oil paint a couple of years ago, aluminum panels quickly became my favorite surface to work on. The inherent smoothness of the surface means the paint application fully determines the final texture, while the glossy quality of the metal parallels the self-reflective content of my paintings.
biography
I am a Brooklyn-based oil painter. Born in Brazil to a Brazilian mother and a Dutch father, I have spent a third of my life in each of Brazil, the Netherlands, and the U.S. Following a master’s degree in Philosophy of Law in the Netherlands, I came to the US on a Fulbright Scholarship to study law. Initially, I attended live figure drawing sessions to escape daily life. In 2019 I started oil painting, and found that I increasingly wanted to paint. I am currently obtaining an MFA at the New York Academy of Art from where I received the Academy Scholar Award and the Henry Buhl Patrons Scholar Award.
